Your guide to glowing summer-ready skin

·

The balmy summer months are a wonderful time of year filled with long lazy beach days, time spent outdoors, and much needed holidays spent with family and friends here in Australia and abroad. Summer also heralds a change in what we wear and how we look after our skin. The warm sweaters and heavy moisturisers of winter and spring are replaced with light easy-breezy wardrobe pieces and a summer-ready skincare regimen.

Wardrobe aside, for glowy, healthy summer skin there are a few skincare essentials to include in your top-to-toe summer skincare regimen.

Read on as we provide a guide to prepping your skin for summer and looking after it during the hottest months.

Summer skincare basics

Summer and humidity go together like sand and surf, they’re a package deal. And as we have all experienced during a hot summer day, humidity means we sweat more and our skin can look and feel extra oily from the increase in sebum production (that’s the oily substance that can clog pores and lead to breakouts).

To help keep humidity-related skin issues at bay in summer, switch to beauty products with lightweight, non-greasy textures. For instance, sub out your creamy cleanser for a gentle gel or mild foaming version that is tough on sweat, dirt and excess oil but won’t strip the skin and lead to dehydration.

Try: Grown Alchemist Gentle Gel Face Cleanser: Geranium Leaf, Bergamot and Rosebud

Humidity can also cause more frequent body breakouts. Similar to changing your face cleanser, opt for a lighter gel body wash or soap formulated with antioxidants (which help keep skin healthy) that will efficiently cleanse the skin without stripping it. Leif Desert Lime Body Cleanser is formulated with high levels of vitamin C and antioxidants along with calming sweet orange oil and vanilla making it a stellar summer body wash option.

Exfoliate

After months of being inside, sloughing off built-up impurities and dry skin with a gentle yet effective exfoliator is a must to prep skin for a summer of outdoor fun. And, during the summer months, regular exfoliation will help keep the skin balanced and free from a build-up of sunscreen, dirt, sweat, sebum and bacteria. Aim to exfoliate the face and body once or twice a week to keep skin balanced.

For the face: Mukti 2-in-1 Resurfacing Face Exfoliant is formulated with a trio of native AHA fruit acids (caviar lime, desert lime and rainforest lime) along with finely ground bamboo particles which work to polish, cleanse and nourish.

For the body: try Hunter Lab Pinot Grape Skin Body Scrub. If you’re planning to get your glow via self-tan, always exfoliate first, we love Three Warriors Tasmanian Sand Scrub.

Self-tan

Self-tan is a great way to get your summer glow on, no sun required. It’s also a good option at the beginning of summer for a boost of radiance to pale, winter skin. Prep the skin by exfoliating first then apply your self-tan for a sun-kissed glow.
Try: Three Warriors Self-Tan Mousse

Hydrate

The extra summer humidity can make the skin feel oilier and in less need of hydration, but salt water, air conditioning, chlorine, sand, and sun exposure can really strip the skin of moisture and dry it out. Amp up hydration in summer but opt for a lightweight lotion or gel moisturiser along with a hydrating antioxidant-rich serum that will work effectively with the increased humidity. Look to ingredients like aloe vera and watermelon that will hydrate and have a cooling effect on hot skin.

Peggy Sue AM + PM Vitamin Duo is a powerhouse evening and day duo packed with antioxidants that will help keep skin radiant and hydrated. To hydrate and refresh the skin throughout the day try Mukti Rose Blossom Hydrating Mist with native Australian extracts of Kakadu plum, kangaroo flower and snowflower which work to hydrate and protect against environmental factors while aloe vera cools, soothes and calms the skin.

Hydrate the hands and body with a hydrating lotion like Saya Hand and Body Lotion with Mandarin Peel, Patchouli, Geranium Bourbon and Cedarwood.

Mask and body oil

If your skin is feeling extra dry or dull from all the sun, surf and sand, add a nourishing skin-brightening mask into your skincare regimen once a week to assist skin in feeling clear, radiant, hydrated and healthy.
Try: The Skills Detox Day Face Mask

For acne-prone skin opt for a clay or charcoal mask to draw out impurities, unclog pores and balance the extra sweat and sebum.
Try: Hunter Lab Charcoal Mud Mask

A lightweight, fast-absorbing body oil will take care of dry skin issues on the body—add a few drops to your bath for a relaxing soak that will soothe your body and your mind.
Try: Arithmos Soothe Rose Geranium Superfine Body Oil

SPF

Finally, SPF. Sunscreen is a summer skincare essential. Apply from head-to-toe every morning and reapply throughout the day to protect the delicate skin on your face and body from harsh UV rays. Don’t forget to apply SPF to your lips, hands, neck and ears. Even on non-beach days, apply SPF to protect your skin from the sun on your commute, eating lunch outdoors or picking up a coffee at an outside café.
