How to change your skincare routine for the best-ever autumn skin

·
6 seasonal skincare switches to make now.
As the long hot days of summer start to turn to the cooler shorter days of autumn, you’ll likely notice a change in your skin. It may feel dry, flaky, itchy, irritated, and prone to inflammation, redness and breakouts, thanks to the change in autumn weather. But, with a few simple skincare switches, you can assist your skin in combating these autumn-related skin issues—and prepare it for the cold, drying winter months, and repair your skin after a summer of fun in the surf, sand and sun.

Read on for 6 simple switches to make to your skincare routine for healthy, radiant autumn skin.

Keep it clean
Consistently cleansing morning and night is one of the keys to healthy skin all year around. Heading into autumn, reach for a cream, oil or milky cleanser formulated with anti-bacterial ingredients like calendula as well as antioxidants (think: sea buckthorn and wattle seed). These will clear out bacteria build-up and any excess humidity-induced sebum (oil) that may still be clogging pores after summer. Your autumn cleanser should also include hydrating ingredients, such as oat, chamomile and aloe vera, to combat the drying effects of the cooler temps and calm any trans-seasonal weather-related irritation.

Try: Grown Alchemist Hydra-Restore Cream Cleanser: Olive Leaf, Plantago Extract
Gracious Minds Daily Elements Antioxidant Oil Cleanser
Peggy Sue Herbal Cleanser

Repair, protect, hydrate
A healthy skin barrier helps to protect against environmental aggressors like pollution and assists in keeping skin feeling and looking healthy, calm and radiant. Harsh skin-damaging UV rays and swimming in the ocean and pools can damage the barrier, and once the weather turns dry and cool in autumn, the barrier can be further compromised leaving skin feeling dry, sensitive and dull.

As autumn rolls around, repair and protect your skin barrier function by upping hydration and promoting antioxidant protection. Swap out your lightweight face lotion for a heavier moisturiser or serum powered by hydrating, soothing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, CoEnzyme Q10 and jojoba oil.

Try: Cannabella Complex CoQ10 Face Serum
Mukti Marigold Hydrating Crème
Grown Alchemist Age-Repair Intensive Moisturiser: White Tea and Phyto-Peptide

Exfoliation switch
Your post-summer skin may be looking dull and in need of a thorough exfoliation to slough off dead skin cells and brighten the skin. Opt for a chemical exfoliator formulated with an AHA or BHA suited to your skin type and concern (read about the skin benefits of the most common beauty acids like lactic acid, glycolic acid, fruit acids and more, here). But, as skin is prone to dryness during the cooler months, consider switching your bi-weekly exfoliation to once a week to avoid drying the skin out further.

Try: Mukti 2-in-1 Resurfacing Face Exfoliant
Hunter Lab Cleansing Facial Scrub
Grown Alchemist Polishing Facial Exfoliant: Pink Grapefruit and Glucomannan Extract

Revisit retinol
Retinol is an all-star anti-ageing and acne-fighting skincare ingredient but as it may increase sun sensitivity, the ideal time to incorporate it into your skincare regimen is in autumn and winter when the UV rays are less harsh. Consider swapping out your summer serum for a serum with retinol, but remember to start slowly with retinol by using it every other day and always use an SPF when using retinol, even in autumn and winter. Find our guide to the skincare benefits of retinol and how to incorporate it into your skincare regimen, here.

Try: Bondi Skin co. Vitamin A (Retinoid) Serum
Peggy Sue AM Vitamin Serum
Mukti Vitamin Booster Vital A Elixir

The good oil
During summer, our skin tends to produce more oil thanks to the extra humidity in the air, so a summer skincare routine doesn’t typically include beauty oil (we don’t want more oil!). However, with the skincare focus in autumn on hydrating and protecting, this is the perfect season to include a beauty oil in your skincare routine. Beauty oils not only soften and soothe dry skin, but they provide a sensory self-care ritual that calms the mind and body too. Reach for a beautiful botanical beauty oil as the last step in your evening autumn skincare routine and wake up to soft, radiant skin. For top-to-toe beauty, after applying your face oil, massage a calming body oil from your décolletage down to your toes.

For face try: Peggy Sue PM Blue Tansy Oil
For body try: Theseeke Rose Elixir or Arithmos Soothe Rose Geranium Superfine Body Oil

Sun care
SPF every day is still a must even when the UV rays aren’t as harsh. Protect the delicate skin on your face, lips, ears, neck, hands and anywhere else that’s exposed to the sun during the day with an SPF suited to your skin type.
